Drink lots of antioxidant green tea. And lay off the refined sugar and booze—both cause aging inflammatory reactions in the skin.

8. GET MOVING.
"Exercise increases blood flow to the skin and promotes a glowing, healthy-looking complexion," Downie says. "Working out for just 30 minutes four or five days a week can make a huge difference."

9. TRY TO RELAX.
The mind-body connection is a powerful one. "Do whatever you need to do to decompress," Waldorf says. "Stress causes cells to age faster, which absolutely shows on the skin."

10. DON'T PICK.

Normal skin
Normal skin feels smooth, has small pores and an equal balance of oil and water. "Wash with a soap-free cleanser or pH-neutral product," advises Sydney dermatologist Dr Tanya Gilmour. You'll also need two cleansers for different seasons, changing from a gel/foam cleanser to a richer milk cleanser during colder months, the National Skin Institute says.

Dry skin

"Starting a good skin care regime early is vital to keep yourself looking good as you become older." Fur flies over Fendi fashion show in South Korea

SEOUL: Scores of animal rights activists demonstrated on Thursday outside a fashion show in the South Korean capital in protest at a decision by Italian designer Fendi to include fur.

"The company of blood, Fendi, the city of blood, Seoul," read one banner outside the venue, a newly completed floating island on the Han river.

"Fur is cruel," read another.

City officials earlier threatened to cancel the event unless all fur items were removed from the catwalk, but later relented after organisers apparently agreed to reduce the number of such items in the show.

An AFP correspondent saw about 12 fur garments in the autumn/winter collection, fewer than the 20 originally planned.

But an estimated 80-90 protesters outside the venue were not appeased.

"A lot of Europeans reject the idea of using fur for clothes, so now luxury companies are rushing to Asia instead to cash in," said Jo Hee-Kyung, head of the Korea Animal Welfare Association.

His members were there to convey a message from the people of Seoul, he said.

Among the demonstrators were elementary schoolchildren, who held stuffed toy animals and wore rabbit ears. "It hurts so much, don't skin us," they chanted.

Police said about 100 plain-clothes officers were on duty but no incidents were reported.

A new study of 18 to 33 year-old women in the UK has found that women who walk in high heels activate their inner and outer calves more evenly than women who wear flats. The women had shapelier legs than those who wore shorter heels.

The results are similar to those found in an Italian study in 2009, which revealed that wearing heels can tone the body, condition muscles and even improve one's sex life. We don't know about that last claim, but we do know we feel instantly sexier when we wear high heels!

LONDON (AFP) – Kate Middleton's ivory and lace wedding dress was designed by Sarah Burton, creative director at the fashion house Alexander McQueen, the palace announced on Friday.

As a smiling Kate entered Westminster Abbey to meet Prince William, officials confirmed long speculation that Burton had made her dress. They had previously refused to give even the slightest detail about it.

"Miss Middleton wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterises Alexander McQueen?s work," officials said in a statement.

"Miss Middleton worked closely with Sarah Burton in formulating the design of her dress."

They said the dress made with ivory and white satin gazar, with a train measuring 2.7 metres (8.8 feet) and lace sleeves, "epitomises timeless British craftsmanship".

The bride had also borrowed a tiara loaned to her by Prince William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Burton took over as creative director at the label after McQueen committed suicide in February 2010. She had previously worked side by side with him for 14 years.

The 36-year-old graduate of Central St Martin's had long been tipped as the wedding dress designer.

A woman wearing a studded leather belt doubled through the loops of her jeans, in a fashion identical to the one favoured by Burton, was photographed on Thursday evening slipping into the Goring Hotel where Kate was staying.

Her head was hidden under a huge fur hat in an attempt to avoid identification.

The dress is expected to spawn a thousand reproductions.

Elizabeth Emanuel, who created Diana's fairytale wedding gown in 1981 with her husband David, is still being asked to make copies of that gown, an ivory silk taffeta frock with a 25-foot (7.6-metre) long train.

"Exactly as it happened in 1981, there are going to be people watching as she walks down the aisle with their sketch pads, with the machinists and pattern cutters all ready and waiting. By the next morning you'll see copies in the high street," Emanuel said.

LONDON – There was tradition and modernity, sober styles and touches of whimsy: the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton showcased Britain's fashion roots, as well as the claim it's staking at the forefront of haute couture.

All eyes, of course, were on the bride's dress — and it immediately became the stuff that dreams are made of.

The gown, whose details were kept secret until Middleton stepped out of the Goring Hotel to travel to Westminster Abbey, was a magnificent ivory confection with lace floral detail designed by Britain's Sarah Burton, creative director at Alexander McQueen.

A plunging neckline added an edgy touch to an otherwise traditional dress with lace-covered sleeves that ended at the wrists. Her hair was half up, half down, lightly curled and decorated with a tiara. She wore drop earrings.

"The dress itself was a glorious mix of modernity with a hint of historic reference and a wonderful silhouette to complement the architectural beauty of the abbey," said Avril Graham, Harper's Bazaar executive fashion and beauty editor.

Maid of honor Pippa Middleton wore a simple cream column dress also designed by Burton, with a deep neckline, and naturally styled hair. Her bridal tones and sashaying walk down the aisle behind her sister caught the eye of several commentators.

"Her dress was exceptionally fitted, and it was basically white," said Mark Niemierko, a wedding planner who has organized some of London's most extravagant nuptials. "For a bridesmaid that's always been a no-no but I think the idea could really catch on."

The flower girls also were decked out in cream dresses with full skirts and flowers in their hair.

Queen Elizabeth II looked stately yet cheerful in a primrose Angela Kelly dress and matching hat.

Carole Middleton, the bride's mother, wore a sky blue wool crepe coatdress with matching satin piping over a sky blue silk shantung day dress. Both were designed by the Catherine Walker label. Middleton's hat was created by British designer Jane Corbett.

The duchess of Cornwall wore a champagne silk dress and a duck egg blue and champagne coat by Anna Valentine, along with a Philip Treacy hat and Jimmy Choo shoes. Anna Valentine designed Camilla's dress for her 2005 wedding to Prince Charles.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg's wife Miriam Gonzalez Duantez — a Spanish attorney — sent tongues wagging with a body-hugging dress draped with lace and a red hat but most guests were more conservative, wearing simple suits and knee length dresses in pastels and blues. Jewelry was understated, too — small earrings and strings of pearls.

On their heads however, guests wore a riot of color, sculpture and design.

"The wedding is an incredible boost for British fashion and for Britain," said Harold Tillman chairman of the British Fashion Council, which promotes British fashion abroad.

"There is nothing better than a morning suit for men — every man looks good in it. And all the guests looked wonderful. Most were beautiful and elegantly understated, with all the wildness and exaggeration in the hats."

Princess Beatrice, 22, the daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, was wearing an ensemble of Valentino couture and gloves by Cornelia James with Treacy hats that rose like a modernist building from her hair.

Her sister, Princess Eugenie, 21, was wearing an outfit by Vivienne Westwood with an equally dramatic hat and a ring by Solange Azagury-Partridge with a Union Jack design. The two sisters love playing with fashion, trying out cutting edge styles many of their aristocratic peers would be too nervous to wear.

"The princesses are young and they wanted to make a statement. They wanted to have a little fun, which they should," said Tillman.

Prime Minister David Cameron's wife, Samantha, broke with tradition: she wore a sparkly hair clip instead of a hat. Her dress was a tight Burberry teal affair set off by a striking necklace by Erickson Beamon for Erdem.

"Her dress and jewelry were great, but I was disappointed she didn't wear a hat," said Niemierko. "She could have easily carried one off."

Zara Phillips, the queen's granddaughter who will also get married later this year, was wearing Paul Costelloe. The couple's friend, Tara Palmer Tomkinson was wearing Deborah Milner.

The wedding presents a golden opportunity for designers. Many replica hats and dresses are expected to be in shops this week.

Victoria Beckham wore a dress of her own design: the dark tones of the smock-like maternity gown had a slightly funereal look. Her husband David was one of the few guests to not wear a British designer, choosing wore a top hat with tails designed by Ralph Lauren, with a medal signifying that he is an officer of the order of the British empire pinned to his jacket.

The crowds outside were more eclectic. Most made sure they dressed warmly for an overcast British spring day, but accessorized with flags and photographs of the newlyweds.

Blonde:
From icy cool to a warm shade of caramel, blondes can have plenty of fun with colour. The trick to carrying it off, bombshell-style, is to work with a shade that complements your complexion. How to Keep a Simple and Effective Skin Care Routine

Good skin is more than just an application upon application of skin care products. Overuse of and a menagerie of skin care products can actually be detrimental to your skin and to your health especially when they are loaded with harmful or otherwise questionable ingredients.

A great complexion and overall great skin, starts with good health which means staying fully hydrated and getting the necessary nutrients, vitamins and minerals in our diet each day. A balanced diet equals better health and a healthier, glowing complexion. Some basic nutrients the skin needs is pure water, zinc, soy protein, vitamin E, vitamin C, B-complex, carotenoids a flavonoids, and omega 3 fatty acids just to name a few.

In addition to a good diet, your skin also needs cleansing, toning, moisture, and protection. Additionally there may be specific problem areas you will need to address such as blotchiness, acne or breakouts, dry patches, etc.

The basics - cleansing, toning and moisturizing, protection

Cleansing: First and foremost you must understand your skin type when selecting a cleanser. Dry skin should avoid foaming cleansers and use a milk cleanser or lotion, oily skin can get by with a foaming cleanser if not to harsh (drying out oily skin only makes the skin react and produce more oil), combination skin should use a cleanser with a low ph of 7 or less. Consider one of these herbal face washes and get 15% off!

Toning: I have read differing opinions on whether a toner is necessary or not but I am a firm believer of toning. Toning removes the last traces of cleanser, restores ph balance and closes the pores prior to moisturizing. Again, understand your skin type when selecting your toner. A few herbs for each skin type are as follows: Dry skin: elderflower and sandalwood, Oily skin: lemon balm or fennel, witch hazel, Combination Skin: Chamomile. There are numerous herbs when mixed with green tea or distilled water makes a great toner at a fraction of the cost of store bought toners. Get your herbs and essential oils at Mountain Rose Herbs.

Moisturizer: My moisturizer has a double duty, it hydrates and protects because it contains a SPF. No matter what skin type, you skin needs to be hydrated. Dry skin needs hydration and moisture and oily skin still needs hydration. Additionally I always recommend a daytime moisturizer with SPF and a nighttime moisturizer emollient rich.

Special Treatments

Dark circles under eyes consider vitamin E. It is a natural moisturizer and rich in antioxidants. It will moisturize and thicken the skin under the eye area so you don't see the thinness. Massage under eye area before bedtime. Note: vitamin E is most effective in its natural alcohol form rather than its acetate form where it is a less effective antioxidant. Watch for this in the labelling of skin care products. Another note: dark under eye circles can be caused by various reasons such as a Vitamin K deficeincy, genetics, bad lifestyle habits, etc. The recipe above is for thinning of the skin as we age.

Crows' feet: no need for a special product, apply virgin coconut oil with a few drops of vitamin E oil at bedtime. I think you will see visible results in about a week. vitamin e is most effective in its natural alcohol form rather than its acetate form where it is a less effective antioxidant. Watch for this in the labelling of skin care products.

Exfoliate: this treatment is to slough off dead skin and promote circulation and new cell growth. There are a number of home remedies that work such as oatmeal or cornmeal.

Facial masks: masks can do wonders to hydrate the skin. Again understanding your skin type is imperative. For dry skin consider a China/White Clay, for oily skin use fuller's earth or French green clay, sensitive skin yellow kaolin clay and combination skin rose clay. As a general rule, you should use natural bristle brushes. Beyond this your hair will determine the type of brush you should use. For more bounce and a tighter wave, select a smaller round brush. For a sleek, straight finish, opt for a thick, large round brush.

New York – Oscar de la Renta is the closest thing America has to a couturier, so in keeping with his mission to dress the Uptown crowd from daytime social functions to a soiree-filled nights, he does two things perfectly: sunny suits and show-stopping gowns.

For his spring 2011 collection, which he showed, of course, on Park Avenue in New York on Thursday, Sept. 16, before a crowd that included Sarah Jessica Parker, de la Renta made his somewhat outdated, though obviously still profitable mission, all the more retro with a series of '50s inspired coats, cardigans, day suits and ball gowns befitting a society lady or debutante circa the Eisenhower years.

A floral theme dominated the looks, whether on a narrow natural linen suit embroidered with organza peonies, an azalea printed sheath dress or in his final look, a gargantuan pink bolero that resembled a puffy carnation worn atop a garden green gown.

Elsewhere, a plaid print with a dripping ink line that had a hand-painted feel was used on a shibori silk cropped jacket paired with a voluminous tulip skirt, or on a double face wool coat.

There were a few concessions to the stiff '50s sheath silhouette in the daywear, like ruffle top silk jumpsuits and a lovely pleated silk organza dress with a peony print.

Then, as "The Great Pretender" played, de la Renta sent out gowns worthy of any flashbulb popping occasion, be it next season's biggest charity ball to Hollywood awards season, though gowns for each respective event might look radically different. For instance, for the charity set, one envisioned the ball gowns with embroidered flowers, covered in polka dots, or accessorized with an over-the-top tulle bolero.

But for the red carpet, where the fashion police would rip those tulle boleros or swan's down skirts to shreds, there were more the classic "old Hollywood" gowns.

Get a degree in “luxury”

Think you know your fashion? Consider yourself a connoisseur of haute couture? Well, now you can put it to use, and get yourself a degree in it. The University of Monaco is offering an MLUX – which translates to a Masters Degree in Luxury.

The university has teamed up with only the best, including the likes of Gucci and Ralph Lauren for case studies and internships.

The University of Monaco website described the program, saying, "It focuses on how the luxury industry interacts with the economic, cultural and technological environments of the twenty-first century, the characteristics of today's luxury consumer and the resonances generated by high-end goods and services."

The official degree is a Masters of Science in Luxury Retail Management (they've already had an MLUX for Luxury Goods and Services), and it's the real deal. The 10-month, 60-credit degree limited to 35 students is completed in three 12-week terms, conducted in English, and costs around $25, 500 per academic year plus fees. That, and whatever it costs to then live in Monaco or a nearby town in the South of France for the duration of your education.

As for the students enrolling? You can guarantee that campus life for these rich kids won’t include cheap beer and second-hand textbooks.

Forget about the power suit. For a bunch of young politicos, it's all about the power shoe. When Reshma Saujani, a candidate running in the New York Democratic primary, admitted to wearing a Kate Spade wedge to pound the pavement, the news inspired a stampede of searches.

The three-inch, round-toe, black-patent wedge called the "Halle," has become the "it" shoe for a circle of female political types, according to a story in the New York Times. Word of the must-have item caused a run on the shoes on Yahoo!: One-day lookups for "kate spade halle" spiked 625%. Shoe lovers voted with their feet with searches on "Kate spade wedges," "kate spade wedge shoes," and "kate spade halle wedge."

Think of these kicks as pantsuits for the feet: They're practical, they wear well, and they look good. With apologies to the "Sex and the City" clan, you cannot barnstorm in Blahniks.

The wedges have a following on the Web as well. The online shoe store Zappos features one happy customer's comments: "For the heel height it's really comfortable." Over on competitor Piperlime, the best-selling shoe is a "Rachel Zoe pick," who explains: "It's a nice alternative to a pump. And a comfy way to look chic." If you're looking to snap up a pair, you may be out of luck. There have been a run on the shoes since word of the gal pols' best-kept shoe secret got out. Talk about retail politics.

Of course, other public figures have had a focus on their footwear, for better or worse.

Shamed former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich, is definitely guilty on one front: His expensive taste in shoes. Documents recently surfaced that showed the showman purchased, along with pricey ties and handmade suits, stacks of shoes from Allen Edmonds for $1,200.

Sarah Palin's introduction back in 2008 as the Republican candidate for vice president led to a run on the Alaska governor's glasses, her hairdo, and yes, those maverick fire-engine red, peep-toe, Naughty Monkey pumps. The heels were described as a shoo-in for clubbing, and New York Magazine pointed out that Paris Hilton was also a fan of the footwear.

First Lady Michelle Obama may have mis-stepped when she showed up at a soup kitchen in sneakers that retailed for $540. (Insert Marie Antoinette analogy now.) The French-designed Lanvin athletic shoes looked like a very upscale version of the Converse low-top: Except instead of canvas, the shoe was made of suede with a pink metallic toe and laced with grosgrain ribbon. No doubt about it, FLOTUS is an uncompromising fashionista from head to toe.

The same cannot be said for her counterpart. The president throws opening pitches in "mom jeans," and shoots hoops in old-school Nikes. The focus is decidedly off of his feet. And the commander-in-chief would undoubtedly agree: That's a good thing.

Words like "Ew, ew" and "Hideous" and even "Me no likey" were used to describe my apparent fashion faux pas.Well, I've got news for you, ladies. This fall? Deep Conditioners
Aim to use a deep-conditioning treatment on your hair at least once a week. You can purchase specially formulated deep conditioners in your local drugstore that promote strong, healthful, nourished hair. If you prefer, you can use a natural hair conditioner such as mayonnaise, mashed avocado or olive oil. Apply the treatment of your choice to unwashed hair. Cover your head with a shower cap or plastic wrap and let the treatment sit for 20 minutes to allow the oils to penetrate your hair shafts and scalp. Wash your hair thoroughly to remove any residue.

It's always a coup to flip a flaw into an asset. But for that other 99.9 percent of the time? Here's the quickest way to hide, disguise, and cosmetically usher the scars and skin gripes right out of the spotlight.

SCARS

"I have a big scar above my eyebrow from a car accident when I was 16," says Gina Pieper, speaking both personally and professionally as the creative director for Empire Beauty Schools with nearly 100 locations.

Tool kit: Tinted moisturizer with SPF, concealer that matches your skin color, and setting powder.

Insider Tricks: Pieper first uses a brush to apply the moisturizer over her entire face. Next, using a smaller brush, she paints a concentrated dab of concealer directly onto the scar. "Some people apply the concealer first," she says, "but I do it afterward because otherwise the foundation can rub it off." To make sure the color is right—if it's lighter than your skin, it will stick out like a sore thumb—you can mix two shades if necessary. The last step is brushing a matte powder onto your face to take away the shine of the concealer. "The biggest tip is to avoid putting too much makeup on the scar," Pieper says. "You might even want to make eyes more dramatic or wear a brighter color lipstick to draw the attention away from that area."

ACNE POCKMARKS

"The challenge with covering any blemish is evening out the color tone so it's the same as the rest of your face," says New York-based celebrity makeup artist Troy Surratt. "In this case, we're also concerned with the texture."

Tool kit: Heavy-duty concealer, foundation, and powder.

Insider Tricks. "With acne scarring, I'll use a small concealer brush and paint the blemish with concealer from every direction—up and down, side to side," says Surratt, whose current clients include LeAnn Rimes, Piper Perabo, and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz. "You really want to get the product into the nooks and crannies. And then you can blend the perimeter with your finger, and set it with powder so that it stays." The concealer is key. Makeup artist Jessica Lauren, owner of Tres Jolie in Manhasset, Long Island, suggests looking for products with silicone, "which acts like spackle," and spot-treating after applying foundation. Surratt swears by Kevyn Aucoin's Sensual Skin Enhancer. "The price point is a little higher but it covers everything—bad scars, darkness arorund the eyes, birthmarks, even a tattoo," he says. "It's heavy-duty artillery."

SPIDER VEINS & BIRTH MARKS

"Spider veins on the face can be caused by sun exposure, trauma, hormones, and acne," says San Diego dermatologist Susan Stuart, MD, former chairman of the division of dermatology at Scripps Memorial Hospital. Also, broken vessels can be congenital or result from medical conditions like rosacea.

Tool Kit: A concealer that's lighter than your skin color, a corrective anti-red product, powder foundation, and a brush for applying powder foundation.

Insider Tricks: Again, delicate targeting of the problem spots is the key. "If you have broken capillaries on the tip of the nose or chin, or on your cheeks," Surratt says, "I would even them out first with concealer. Then, for bad rosacea I would apply a mineral makeup powder foundation with a fluffy brush, lightly and sparingly." When needed, he also uses an anti-red corrective cream or powder to "neutralize the pinkness of the skin." You can employ a similar technique to "erase" birthmarks and freckles, says Lauren, using a concealer one or two shades lighter than your founda

DARK CIRCLES & PUFFY EYES

For puffy bags, West Palm Beach dermatologist Kenneth Beer, MD, sometimes tries an anti-allergy drug or diuretic. Stuart says antihistamines can also help—along with sleeping propped up on pillows and packing moistened tea bags on the eyelids. For dark circles, it's all about the makeup.

Toolkit: A not-too-creamy concealer, translucent setting powder, and lash-curling mascara.

Insider Tricks: Surratt likes to dab a bit of concealer in that crescent-shaped hollow under the eye, starting at the tear duct. He also dots some on the lids and lash lines, both upper and lower. It's important that the concealer match the rest of your face color so there's no "raccoon eye" demarcation. And to make sure it doesn't settle into the fine lines or travel, find a product that has a rich viscosity—but isn't too creamy—and dust it with a sheer powder to set it. Finally, finish with a lash curler, or one of the new bend-and-lift mascaras. "Instantly, you'll look a lot more bright-eyed and bushy-tailed."

STRETCH MARKS

They're not on the face, but we still have a few more days of summer. Caused by pregnancy, weight gain, and extreme weight loss, stretch marks typically start out purple and blue, then fade to a glossy sliver or white.

Toolkit: Sunless tanning products or airbrush makeup

Insider Tricks: "The best way to hide stretch marks is to use self-tanners," says Stuart. "Just avoid actual tanning because it makes them more noticeable." Better yet, Jessica Lauren recommends airbrush makeup. You can get it done professionally or DIY-it with a kit. "It's a waterproof, spray-on foundation," Lauren says, "and it stays where you put it until you wash it off."

WHEN MAKEUP IS NOT ENOUGH

Of course, sometimes no amount of concealer or airbrushing helps. "Scars can be terrible reminders of what happened," reminds Daniel Sapen, PhD, a clinical psychologist in Huntington, Long Island. "Even a healthy attitude stumbles when faced with the mirror and the image associated with the injury." Any time an appearance issue keeps you from attending social events, enjoying life, or feeling competent. you might want to think about seeing a mental health professional.

1. Eating chocolate and greasy foods makes you break out.
Go ahead and chow down. There’s nothing in a candy bar or pepperoni pizza that’s going to make zits suddenly sprout—“unless maybe you rub the pizza across your face a few times,” says New York City dermatologist Diane Berson. (So please, try to hold yourself back.) The only foods that may exacerbate acne are sushi, shellfish, and soy sauce, explains Dr. Berson; they all contain high amounts of iodine, which has been linked to inflammation and breakouts.

2. Dry skin causes wrinkles.
Wouldn’t it be great if a little moisturizer could keep lines at bay? Unfortunately, wrinkles form when collagen breaks down far below the surface of the skin (which is right where dry skin occurs). Moisturizers can improve the appearance of lines, though, by temporarily plumping the parched skin around them. Sun exposure is the number one cause of collagen degeneration, so if you want a moisturizer that offers good wrinkle protection, look for one with sunscreen and an anti-aging antioxidant like vitamin C.

3. Cold water will shrink your pores.
You got your pore size from mom and dad (thanks, guys); not much will change it. “Cold water constricts blood vessels so skin only feels tighter,” says Dr. Hirsch. But you can minimize their appearance on the surface. When pores are clogged with oil and dead skin, they look bigger. A product with salicylic acid cleans them out. Pores also stretch as you lose collagen. And one more time: Sun breaks down collagen. So wear sunscreen—it’ll do more for your pores than an icy splash will.

The Thong Is Dead!

Until recently, cheekless undies were everywhere. But as sales dip lower than the hipster jeans that were designed to expose them, a new power pantie is poised to take over.

A little more than 10 years ago, the Macarena was a hit, the Rachel haircut was in, and wearing a thin strip of fabric between your butt cheeks was considered daringly sexy. Thankfully, the dance is now socially unacceptable, and those layers have grown out. But what about the thong? Although our love for it has endured, its popularity appears to be fading, and recent figures show another style is taking over. We conducted an investigation to find out how thongs went from hot to not and target the man-melting undies you must own now.

The Rise of the Whale Tail

The lead-up to the thong's run began more than three decades ago. In the '80s, Jane Fonda became a leotard-clad fitness guru, inspiring women to strip down and get fit. "This built a momentum," says Jill Fields, PhD, author of An Intimate Affair: Women, Lingerie, and Sexuality. "In a few years, the idea of fitness became normal, and the everyday woman wanted to show off her aerobicized body." As a result, women started dressing in clingier, more revealing clothing to accentuate the tight backsides they had earned in step class. Not only did this call for an undergarment that would eliminate the dreaded visible pantie line (VPL), but a skimpy thong was also in keeping with the supersexy sensibility (i.e., casual sex) that dominated the era.

The thong made its way into more and more women's wardrobes and, in 1995, truly had its coming-out party. That's when Victoria's Secret put on its first-ever public runway show, and lingerie became visible in a way it never had been before. "Underwear fashion shows have been around since the 1930s," says Fields, "but back then, it was a private trade show that only undergarment buyers could attend." After the whole world saw that, yes, Heidi and Tyra were flossing, demand for the thong skyrocketed. "Retailers responded by turning them out in an array of fabrics and colors," says Fields. "And denim brands like Juicy Couture and Frankie B began to cut jeans superlow for the sole purpose of exposing the cute new designs."

Two highly publicized events helped grant the thong its iconic status. First, frisky President Bill Clinton was busted for fooling around with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, and one of the juiciest tidbits Monica confessed was that she had seduced him by flashing her thong. Soon after, Britney Spears solidified her status as pop's steamiest act by performing in a rhinestone thong under sheer pants at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. The hot factor of the T-shaped undie had reached an all-time high.

Vegetable Oils
One tablespoon of cottonseed oil offers 4.8 mg of vitamin E, while safflower oil isn't far behind with 4.6 mg. Try safflower oil to caramelize veggies or fruits, like the pear topping in this Butternut Squash Soup recipe.

Turnip Greens
These may seem like an unlikely superfood, but don't give up on the humble turnip green: A half cup has 2.9 mg of Vitamin E and just 24 calories.In addition to Vitamin E, a half a cup of turnip greens have 441 mg of vitamin A (in the form of beta carotene) and 24 calories -- and with Vitamin C, folate, Vitamin K and calcium as well, they're far more nutritious than the turnip itself. Try young leaves as an accent to a salad, or boil twice, replacing the water in between, to serve as a side dish. Also look for mustard and dandelion greens for a similar leafy health boost.

Pine Nuts
One ounce of pine nuts contains 2.6 mg of vitamin E and 191 calories. Pine nuts are a great addition to pasta dishes or salads, such as this recipe for Orzo Pasta Salad.

Tomato Paste
A quarter cup of tomato paste has 2.8 mg of vitamin E and 54 calories. Try this recipe for Pork, Beans and Organic Beer Chili. A half cup of tomato puree or tomato sauce both have 2.5 mg of vitamin E.

Peanut Butter
Peanut butter contains 2.5 mg of vitamin E and 192 calories per two tablespoons. A perfect excuse for a PB and J, or you could try this recipe for Sesame Noodles.

Wheat Germ
Plain toasted wheat germ, an excellent topping for hot cereals, has 2.3 mg of vitamin E and 54 calories per two tablespoons. Try this Hazelnut-Honey Granola.

I was sitting on her sofa, waiting for the video to start (and, okay, thinking of Edward Cullen), when her four-year-old son walked up to me thisclose and said: “Why are you wearing lipstick?!” Stumped, I replied, “Because I like to look pretty?” He threw up his hands, ran around the room, and yelled, “OH WOW, BEAUTIFUL!” I’ll take this kid over Edward Cullen anytime.

Day 3: Revlon Fire and Ice
Today, I feel very nostalgic; I’m wearing Revlon Super Lustrous lipstick Fire and Ice. This lipstick has been around since at least the 1950s, when Revlon threw a huge advertising campaign for it with such lines as “Would you streak your hair with platinum without consulting your husband?” The lipstick feels wonderful on—not too greasy or dry, just perfect. And the color? Elle associate beauty editor Maura Lynch took one look and said, “Now that’s a perfect coral red!” I was thrilled, then realized I was struck by the urge to put streaks in my hair.

Day 4: Estée Lauder Rich Red
Busy day at work—and everything needs to be done YESTERDAY. I need a boost. My boss says, “I’m not used to not seeing you in red lipstick.” Bingo! I decide to put on Estée Lauder Signature Hydra Lustre Lipstick in Rich Red in honor of the original beauty biz workaholic, Estée Lauder (who showed up at the office until well into her eighties). I swipe on the lustrous, creamy blue red color, inhale its feminine floral scent, and take in my reflection. My boss says it perfectly, “Ah, much more you.” Thanks, Estée!

Day 5: Nars Jungle Red
Normally, I tiptoe around the orange-y shades, but I shocked myself by loving the bright red tone of Jungle Red by Nars, as well as its amazing long-lasting texture, which is a just-right combo of matte and slick. When I asked burlesque star World Famous *BOB* what her favorite red lipstick is (burlesque stars know a thing or two about makeup), she said she also loved Jungle Red, because “it’s bright and has staying power—two things I strive for myself.” Amen! That deserves a shimmy or two.

Day 6 and Day 7: Shiseido 415 and Chanel Lover
I’ve been rocking two amazing lipsticks the past couple of days, courtesy of the recommendations of two awesome Elle beauty staffers: Assistant Janna Johnson’s fave red lipstick is Shiseido 415, while senior editor April Long says je t’adore to Chanel Lover. I wear Lover when I’m in a more sedate mood and crave something rose red, silky, and a little sheer, with a lovely, delicate powdery scent. And when I’m up for standing out in the crowd, the Shiseido is a great bet; it’s a bolder, more opaque formula, a true red. Two different lipsticks courtesy of two different ladies. Merci!

Day 8: M.A.C Russian Red
I had a job interview the other day, and I couldn’t help but to think WWMD? What Would Madonna Do? Put on a cone bra, bulldoze into the head honcho’s office, and start vogue-ing? Well, I couldn’t do that, but I could shore up my confidence by wearing Russian Red by M.A.C, a phenomenal dark red matte shade that Madonna wore during her Blonde Ambition tour in the 90s. It’s truly one of my favorite lipstick shades ever, long-lasting and rich as all get out. And something must have worked, because I did put on the Russian Red that day and P.S.: I got the job.

Day 9: Armani Hollywood Red
Crystals, black velvet, Armani label? Sounds like something Beyoncé would wear to a red carpet event; in fact, it’s the luxe packaging for ArmaniSilk, the brand’s latest lipstick. I tried on the Hollywood Red shade during an annoying morning commute (my train’s engine broke down, then I was stranded on a cold platform for 20 minutes), and I have to tell you, the vivid red color really did give my crabby self a lift. The formula feels amazingly light and sheer on the lips, aided by “an exceptional blend of Micro silk powders,” the company’s site says. I just know I’ll keep this lipstick around for my next bungled commute.

Day 10: Lipstick Queen Rouge Sinner
Poppy King is one of my personal heroes: She started her own lipstick line at 18 by looking up a cosmetic manufacturer in the phone book. When I was 18, I was cutting classes to go to the movies (but that’s a whole other story). Today, hoping for a piece of her energy and gumption, I’m wearing her Lipstick Queen Rouge Sinner. For aficionados, the thicker texture (shea butter and 90 percent pigment) and dark shade is similar to M.A.C Russian Red, if a little more on the rose side. Poppy says it “looks good on everyone night or day.” Ah, I can feel the entrepreneurial urge kicking in right now…

Day 11: E.l.f Royal Red
Want a bold color but not quite ready for stoplight red? I would try E.l.f. Royal Red. It’s surprising when you first open the cap—the lipstick is a gold color with just a little bit of burgundy. But once on, it’s a wine red with a gold sheen. And it’s pretty long-lasting; it hung in there through my lunch with co-workers. I had a margarita and cheese enchilada with mole sauce, and the shade stayed prettily without leaving that annoying ring around your mouth, which often happens when your lip color is wearing off.

Day 13: Lipstick Queen Medieval
Ultimate test of a lip stain? See if you can apply it on a jerking train without looking, and then have it look right when you check in a mirror. Lipstick Queen Medieval successfully passed this test—and New Jersey Transit trains are probably the jerkiest of the jerky. Medieval is the loveliest, lightest, most natural red stain; the color is as if you’ve been chewing on your lip—or sucking on a popsicle. And it feels moisturizing (courtesy of vitamin E), not sticky. Also, I put the stain on with just concealer and mascara and boom—instantly looked awake and ready for work. (FYI: I do recommend looking when putting on concealer and mascara.)

Day 13: Revlon ColorStay in Top Tomato
Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick says in its ads that it is “food-proof.” Today, I put that to the test, wearing Top Tomato, a nice brick red. It was a tough challenge, to say the least, right up there with a bowl of soup, and, say, kissing. It was my lunch: a bag of Cheetos. (That noise you hear? It’s the collective shudder of nutritionists around the world.) Yes, that powdery, nuclear orange snack has ruined many a made-up mouth, and ColorStay passed with flying, ahem, colors. The Cheetos simply flaked off, and my beautiful red shade stayed intact. Perhaps one day I’ll venture forth and test it on a better lunch: a salad?

Day 14: Kat Von D Hellbent
I admit it: I wore Kat Von D Hellbent Lipstick for the attention…while I was walking my dogs. The color is a more soft pink red than I expected from this edgy, rock ‘n’ roll tattooer. (It has a soft sheen, and fades to a nice fuchsia throughout the day.) But I still figured, it’s red enough for someone to notice it while I did this most mundane of chores. The lawn maintenance guys next door didn’t notice me while I strolled by with my pooches. People walking next to us? Nary a glance from them. My dogs? Nah, they were just doing their business. Dejected, I returned home, and stepped inside. Right away, my roommate looks at me coming in and says, “Ooooo, you look so pretty in that red!” Score! Mission accomplished!

Day 15: Guerlain Rouge G Geisha
When I ordered Rouge G de Guerlain Jewel Lipstick Compact in Geisha, I thought of subtle images: graceful creatures with elegant kimonos, porcelain skin, and perfect little bow mouths. Little did I know what I was in for when I opened the package: the Cadillac Escalade of lipstick cases! In other words, big, flashy, over-the-top…and fun! The large, hinged silver lid opens up to reveal the lipstick itself and not just one mirror, but two—the more to peer at your pucker with. And the shade? It delivers. The beautiful cherry red would fit in just fine in the geisha houses in Kyoto.

Day 16: Guerlain KissKiss Exces de Rouge
With its vintage-inspired packaging, Guerlain KissKiss Lipstick in Exces de Rouge (a berry red shade) wouldn’t look out of place on an antique dressing table with a gold-trimmed hand mirror and hairbrush set. And so, when I put the lipstick on, I wouldn’t have been surprised to look down and see I was wearing a negligee and marabou-trimmed high-heel slippers, rather than my T-shirt, jeans, and Converse. I wore the shade to Whole Foods, where I pulled aside an employee to ask where the spelt bread was. As she answered, she looked from my eyes to my mouth, and back again. Was she dazzled by the red color? Who knows? I just know I how I felt—like I was swanning down the aisles like Rita Hayworth.

Day 18: Chanel Passion
While testing these lipsticks, I’ve been putting test swatches on my hand for the past couple of weeks. On my commute home from Midtown Manhattan to New Jersey, I went into a bakery at Penn Station. I heard a voice say, "That one is definitely the best." Confused, I looked up, and the bakery counter girl was pointing at my mouth! She said she noticed the swatches and wanted to tell me the color I was wearing was the best one. Cool! (I was wearing Chanel Rouge Allure Lipstick 14 Passion, a bright red with a touch of blue.)

Day 19: YSL Red Muse
On my way home from work, I was walking down Seventh Ave. toward Penn Station. A bicycle messenger suddenly skidded to a stop next to me and said, "Don't be scared, baby, but I just wanted to tell you you look fine in that red lipstick." Aaagh! Creepy…but I admit, I felt a small thrill about the lipstick compliment. What was I wearing? YSL Rouge Volupté Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick SPF 15, in shade 17 Red Muse. A wonderful deep fuchsia red with an extremely satiny and creamy texture. That messenger has taste!

Day 20: Clinique Ambrosia
Don’t be scared of Clinique Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick in Ambrosia when you first open the cap. You’ll see a sparkly orange that’s fit to wear to an ‘80s karaoke night and not much else. But I wanted to challenge myself with this color; I usually shy away from orange reds, and when an online description called this an orange with a touch of red, I jumped. I’m glad I did. Like the name, it does go on deliciously smooth. And the color? I picture a warm peachy sunset. Like buttah!

Day 21: Wet n Wild Red Hot
Wet n Wild Silk Finish Lipstick Red Hot 519 A is the first red lipstick that made me feel like a ’50s sweater calendar girl. The color—a combo of a candy apple red and pink bubblegum—the girly fruity-licious smell, and the slick texture (it’s loaded with aloe) made me want to throw on a leopard-themed outfit, curl up on some pillows and pose—in a most ladylike way, of course. And at an amazing $1.29, you really can’t pass this up this opportunity to be a pinup.

BONUS! Day 22: CoverGirl in Really Red
CoverGirl Continuous Color Lipstick in Really Red 575 has been described on blogs as a “bright and hot” red. It is indeed really red—if you layer it up. It starts out as a more prim, sheer shade, with my lips showing through. The other day, wearing this color, I went out to dinner and drinks with friends. I was tempted to take a cue from my demure lipstick, and just order the lightest of white wines, or even a seltzer, and a salad. (I ended up with a beer and a cheeseburger. Oh well.) My friends said the shade lasted throughout the whole meal, but I didn’t believe them. I looked in the mirror, and there it was: It had faded, just a little, into a lovely—and prim—red pink.

Luxury-Goods Sales Still Soft, Recovery Unlikely Before 2011

The luxury-goods industry is stuck in a slump.

LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world's largest luxury-goods company, on Monday said its third-quarter sales slipped 0.6%, hindered by the consumer-spending implosion and retailers working down inventories without ordering new merchandise.

The luxury-goods industry likely won't fully recover from the downturn until 2011 or 2012, consulting firm Bain & Co. said in a forecast released Monday. This year's decline in sales of luxury goods, including apparel, jewelry and fashion accessories, will be steep, off 8% to about $227 billion, Bain predicts.

LVMH, a bellwether for the luxury-goods industry, declined to give a full-year profit forecast even though all of its divisions performed better than in the first half. Steep declines in LVMH's champagne and watches businesses brought sales down to €4.14 billion ($6.17 billion), off from €4.16 billion last year.

"I don't think we can say the crisis is over, but we can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel, even though the light is far away," said LVMH Chief Financial Officer Jean-Jacques Guiony.

Claudia D'Arpizio, a Bain retail consultant based in Milan, said she expects the industry's heavyweights—a group that's generally defined to include companies like LVMH, Cartier owner Compagnie Financiere Richemont, and Gucci Group, part of France's PPR SA—to hold up better than smaller players. Mr. Guiony said LVMH aims to increase its market share this year, spread out over categories from cognac to perfume, bags and jewelry.

New Season of Top Model Short on Stature, Tall on Fierceness

Beauty Trends: Sepia-Toned Makeup

“We were inspired by a sepia photograph of a woman from the 1930s and the shading on her face,” says makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, who created the look for Donna Karan’s fall 2009 show, adding that the gray-brown image had the same tonality as Karan’s collection (“We didn’t want to do anything too graphic or too colorful”).

To mimic the three-dimensional appearance of the sepia-toned headshot, Tilbury accentuated models’ cheekbones with a creamy, pale pink lipstick and framed eyes with M.A.C Cream Colour Base in Dusk and Root. A “plasticlike, wet, modern finish” came courtesy of gold-flecked black lip gloss for eyelids and pearlescent highlighter on cheeks and down the center of the nose.

Highlighter was also dusted on lips, over M.A.C Lipstick in Half ‘n Half and a layer of foundation: “The foundation dulls the lipstick down and makes it a little more neutral—I didn’t want any sheen,” says Tilbury. “Highlighter allows a little bit of light to come through and gives a soft, dreamy shimmer.”

Yigal Azrouël’s fall 2009 show was full of black pieces—with eyes to match.

“The clothes have a lot of leather and heaviness, so Yigal wanted something that was a little rock ’n’ roll,” says Polly Osmond, who invented the striking black-rimmed eyes for Azrouël’s fall 2009 show. “I’m trying to move forward from the regular greasy look, so I’ve created a supermatte black eye using four different products, layering them on top of each other.”

For an intense makeup look, Osmond utilized two black eye liners—an ultradark kohl pencil and M.A.C Fluidline gel eye liner in Blacktrack—as shadows, blending them over the entire lid. Next, she dabbed a tiny bit of gray eye shadow in the inner corners and mattified the lid with M.A.C’s Greasepaint Stick, which hits stores in October (“It’s not what it sounds like; it’s actually very, very matte,” Osmond says about the new product).

So why all the layers? “Matte makeup is difficult to work with—it sticks and it stays there. A base underneath is necessary in order to create movement.” To finish the three-dimensional black eyes, Osmond lavished lashes with a generous helping of black mascara.

"You have to match them to your natural hair texture," he says. Here, how to know which kind is right for your mane type.
If you have a curly coif, go for long, graduated layers all over your head to give your spirals definition so they are less frizz-prone.

If your strands are superfine, make some of your layers around ear-length to get volume at the roots.

This week, U.K. water park Alton Towers issued a mandate to male guests: No more Speedos. Reps for the park called the ban on tiny trunks an "extreme measure," but explained it was meant "to prevent embarrassment among fellow members of the public and to maintain the family-friendly atmosphere at the resort.

"And:"We feel this small brief style is not appropriate for a family venue so we are advising male bathers to wear more protective swimwear such as shorts."Such a tough issue! Sure, there's a bit of discrimnation going on. Alton park allows female guests to wear thong bathing suits, which seem, by this measure, as offensive as a man's banana hammock.

If it's a conservative family park, one would think it'd find bare butts as unseemly as the outline of a bulge.However, Speedos are kind of gross. They're cheesy-hilarious, sure, but they're also pretty much twig-and-berry X-ray machines, revealing a super-graphic silhouette of the wearer's junk. It's like having shiny seal skin stretched over the area--there's not a lot left to the imagination.

And watching that come down a steep, slippery slide? Awkward!Would we really be so sad to see this swimwear go forever? Not here, of course. But the Euros, they love to splash around in man panties. Stay Cool on the Go
While it’s commonly believed that sweating helps detoxify your body, the truth is that sweat contains few toxins. According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, the liver and kidneys—not the sweat glands—are what filter toxins from the blood; sweat simply serves to cool you down when you overheat. Prescription oral medications such as oxybutynin and glycopyrrolate are another option but are typically considered a last resort, as they can be accompanied by serious side effects that include drowsiness, visual impairment, and dryness of the mouth.

Try Red Carpet Treatment
If you’ve exhausted over-the-counter antiperspirants to no avail, you may consider doing what many Hollywood starlets are rumored to do: Get Botox injections in your underarms and/or feet. To be fair, I'm game to dispense my own healthy eating wisdom when asked, even if it means subtly (or not so subtly) telling someone that the bag of chips they have in hand isn't necessarily helping his bottom line. But I've also noticed that the "shoulds" and "should-nots" so many people dole out can be factually incorrect.

See if you've heard any of the following common eating tips that can actually backfire and cause weight gain. Ignore them and watch stubborn pounds fall off:

BAD ADVICE: Eat a variety of foods!

WHY YOU SHOULD SKIP IT: Ask any buffet buff: We're hardwired to eat more when faced with countless different choices. This trait gives us an advantage when a spread consists of low-cal, filling fare such as veggies and lean protein. But unless you whiz by the baked goods section and restrict yourself to the produce displays, your kitchen is most likely stocked with a variety of healthy and not-so-healthy edibles.

HOW TO SMARTEN UP: Pay attention to everything healthy you have accomplished rather than what you haven't, or any shortcomings you think you have. And don't compare yourself to others. Instead, focus on your achievements, say, "I cut 1 minute off my 10K time." And don't obsess over the end goal, such as your proposed 15-pound weight loss. Keep goals small so they are more easily attainable, like "I'm going to make it to Spinning class twice this week," or "I'm going to drink water rather than juice or soda."

Blue eye shadow often gets a bad rap, but the gorgeous aqua lids at Nicole Miller’s fall 2009 show are reason enough to try this trend. “I wanted to do a smoky eye in a color that felt beautiful and classic—the collection is accented with blue so we went with that,” says lead makeup artist James Kaliardos, of M.A.C Cosmetics.

For a three-dimensional look, Kaliardos mixed a matte shadow (M.A.C Eye Shadow in Atlantic Blue) with a shimmer one (M.A.C Eye Shadow in Freshwater). “The matte color gives intensity and deposits more pigment where you need it, near the eyelashes,” says Kaliardos. “The shimmer reflects the light and gives a bit of action to the eye—when the eye is totally matte I don’t think it looks as alive.”

To finish the cerulean peepers, Kaliardos added a dab of M.A.C Cream Colour Base in Pearl to the inner corners (“It makes the eyes pop”) and coated upper lashes with mascara.

Experts reveal the scary consequences of yo-yo dieting

For his role in The Machinist, Christian Bale lost nearly 65 pounds, maintaining his frail frame by eating only 275 calories a day over the course of four months. “It was like a massive shock to my body because of what I was trying to get it to do,” said Bale in an interview with the BBC.

The bottom line? Don’t try this at home. “When celebrities lose loads of weight, they often have a team of professionals—doctors, nutritionists, and trainers,” says Christine Avanti, nutritionist and author of Skinny Chicks Don't Eat Salads, who worked with Jeremy Piven to healthily drop 20 pounds for his character in Smokin’ Aces. “But no matter who you are, this extreme dieting can be very harmful. People who go on and off low-carb diets get puffy and bloated easily because their body will not break down carbohydrates as efficiently as someone who eats carbohydrates more often.”

Besides, says Cheryl Forberg, RD, nutritionist for The Biggest Loser, “When people follow crazy diets like fasting, they’re usually just shifting water around, losing water weight.” Another negative side effect of rapid weight loss is that muscle mass is lost too: “Not only do we need muscle for flexibility and strength, it burns 10 times as many calories as our fat tissue and is metabolically more active,” Forberg says. Without precious fat-burning muscle, dieters who suddenly stop dieting will find they put pounds back on at a much faster rate—and could wind up being even more obese than they were to begin with. A lowered metabolism also plays a part in accelerated postdiet weight gain.

“When you severely limit your calorie intake, after a certain point your body adapts and forces your metabolism to slow down, and you stop losing weight,” says Vincent J. Portera, DC, and nutritionist for JF Gymnastique at the Julien Farel Salon. In effect, even though your weight is increasing, your metabolism will still be low. “You don’t want your body to be a Yugo car burning calories slowly—you want it to be a Ferrari, burning them quickly. If you eat in a more balanced way and exercise, you can restore your metabolism in a few weeks, but if you continue to go off and on a diet, it could take up to a year for your metabolism to get back to normal; when you yo-yo, it’s harder to recover your metabolism the way it was before you started.”

Yo-yo dieting affects your body—and it can wreak havoc on your psyche. Portera says he often sees crash dieters go though extreme mood swings: “They are much more likely to have reactive blood sugar,” he explains. “Their blood sugar drops, so they eat something and it spikes up. Then a half hour later, they’re moody and eating something again.”

Still, eating smaller portions is easier said than done; finding healthier ways to enjoy your favorite foods is also necessary. If you crave sugar, “drizzle dark chocolate over fresh grapefruit slices to satisfy a sweet tooth while benefiting from vitamin C and other nutrients,” says celebrity trainer Valerie Walters, who has worked with Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel. “Consuming fruits and vegetables with high water content like grapefruit helps you feel fuller. You might also try nutrient-dense foods such as red peppers, apples, and those that are high in fiber, like grains and lentils.”

Good fats—avocado, almonds, flax seeds—are satisfying and make you feel less deprived, too. “Put some almonds in your yogurt or cereal, or avocado in your salad or sandwich instead of mayonnaise—it tastes great, and it’s filling,” says Forberg.

To complement healthy eating, Greene says you must also "commit to becoming healthier and fitter. Instead of trying to change overnight, make gradual, manageable habit changes. It's better to work out for 35 minutes three times a week than to try and work out for an hour every day and give up because you don’t have the time or energy for it.”

Even the slightest bit of exercise will benefit you mentally as well, says Binks: “Physical activity is important to successful maintenance—it helps joints, bones, heart, and mood.”

Whole-Grain Cereal and Orange Juice

Start your day out right by eating whole grain cereal and drinking a glass of orange juice for breakfast; both are rich in folic acid (also known as folate), which has been shown to contribute to better memory and faster information processing. For midday munching, you can get folate from foods like soybeans, green peas, broccoli, and lentils.

Cauliflower and Peanuts

A recent study done by McLean Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, suggests that taking a minimum of 500mg of citicoline supplements a day can help boost mental energy and efficacy. Citicoline, a natural substance found in all living cells, can also be ingested via cauliflower and peanuts—both are sources of choline, which is converted to citicoline in the brain.

Broccoli, Sprouts, and Spinach

When ordering your salad at lunchtime, be sure to include these veggies; a 25-year Harvard Medical School study of more than 13,000 women showed that participants who ate cruciferous and leafy greens retained their memory best. The more you eat of these vegetables, the better!

Berries, Grapes, and Plums

In terms of fruit, berries have some of the highest concentrations of antioxidants. Plus, they’re packed with anthocyanin, a phytochemical that may help reverse age-related memory loss and protect against the breakdown of brain cells. Quercetin, another phytochemical, produces similarly beneficial results. Blueberries, red apples, and darker-colored grapes (red, black, and purple) are superpowerful, as they contain both of these flavonoids.

Salmon and Sardines

Numerous studies have revealed the memory-boosting properties of omega-3 fatty acid and certain fish—namely salmon, mackerel, sardines, and herring—are full of omega-3s. Eating these kinds of fish at least once a week will keep you thinking younger—three years younger, to be precise (a study by Rush University Medical Center in Chicago found that men and women who ate fish at this frequency had memory functions equivalent to a person three years their junior). Not a fan of fish? Consider taking fish-oil supplements instead.

Be forewarned—too-light highlights will not give you the summery glow you’re looking for (so eliminate all fantasies of bleached-blond Baywatch strands).

“They can wash you out and make you look sallow, pale, and old. If you have no color in your hair, you’ll have no color in your skin,” top colorist Rita Hazan tells ELLE magazine. Instead, you want to opt for warm highlights—think honey hues for blonds, caramel tones for brunettes—and warm makeup to match.

“Your skin should reflect your new hair color so that you don’t look too white and pasty,” says makeup master Napoleon Perdis. “You need to wear warmer makeup tones—not darker, just warmer. For example, you can use an earthy eye shadow to warm the eye up and add a sparkle of color with eye liner. Blue, turquoise, silver, gold—it doesn’t matter as long as you’re using liner and not covering the entire eye; you don’t want to end up looking like Barbie.”

Less is indeed more when it comes to summer makeup. “Clean, fresh skin is key,” says Perdis, who suggests using a clear pore-perfecting primer or one with a bronze tint. Of course, if you’re self-conscious about overzealous blemishes, Perdis says foundation can be applied too: “Put it on the feature areas around the eyes, lips, and nose and blend it out to nothing across the forehead and edge of the face.” Once you’ve created sparkling eyes and flawless skin, Perdis recommends finishing with mascara on the lashes, and a dab of lip gloss or lipstick on lips.
